She was tired, so very very tired. Every time she thought she could stand on her own it started again. The whispers, the doubts and hateful words. Bruises hidden by makeup, the dark circles from sleep lost and tears shed carefully concealed from everyone. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, painfully stinging her skin as she stumbled through the park, the lights dimmed by the downpour. She could do this. She could break away and stand tall again. She could have the confidence to hold her head high. She had the people to stand beside her and remind her she was never alone, that she was good enough. Lightning flashed overhead and she glanced at it for a moment, mascara running down her face from the rain. Taking a deep breath she straightened her shoulders and strode past the brick building that housed the bathrooms, determined to leave all that negativity behind her. Her heart finally slowed, the sick feeling left her stomach and she marveled for a moment at the simple pleasure of feeling normal for once.
Relief was short lived as a pair of hands grabbed her shoulders, throwing her forcefully into the brick wall. Pain shot up her shoulder and head as she collided, driving the breath out of her. Collapsing to her knees the sick feeling instantly returned to her stomach, her heart instantly racing to a painful point. Grasping at her chest she looked up, already knowing what would be in front of her. He looked strong, stronger than he had any right to be. His lip always seemed to be curled in a disgusted snarl or a self satisfied smirk. The latter only came out when he succeeded in breaking her down, something he seemed to delight in. He was predatory, shifting on the balls of his feet before reaching down to grab her by her hair, lifting her as she cried out and grabbed at his arm.
"You stupid bitch. You REALLY thought you'd escape me? You thought what, you'd be happy? You're not worth it and you never have been. You're dumb, worthless and pathetic. At one point you were a fucking warrior and now? Now you can't even take me down. Who the fuck would bother with you now?" he snarled.
A toss of his arm and he threw her against the wall again, sending stars through her vision. She felt his words sink into her skin, into her mind again. He was right after all; she had let herself go and she knew it. She was weak, helpless against his attacks. Looking down she didn't see his hand as it closed around her throat, lifting her to pin her against the wall as she struggled to breathe, her heart hammering in her chest.
"You will NEVER deserve the love you get. And NO ONE is going to love you once they figure out how you really are. They'll drop you for the newest, better thing." His voice was low, sinister.
Eyes wide she grabbed at his wrist in a panic, a flash of lightning suddenly illuminating them. In the flash of light she eyes locked on a small tattoo on the inside of her wrist, fresh with the redness still around it. Three intertwined circles, all solid and very real and very much part of her. The glimpse of the tattoo made her racing mind suddenly still. It halted the shutting down she did as a defense mechanism and set alight a fire in her, one full of love and righteous rage. It brought forth memories of whispered words of love, promises to always be there, and hands intertwined. Her grip on his wrist steadied, tightened as she stopped moving for a split second. A low growl rumbled like the thunder through the night and he thought that's what it was, until she lifted her head, her gaze blazing and a snarl of her own curling her lip.
Using his arm as leverage she lifted her body, bending her leg to deliver a solid kick to his chest. Stumbling backwards he released his drip on her, his gaze breaking from hers for a moment. Landing in a crouch she stood again, the flame inside her burning brighter and brighter until she felt it flow through her whole body. Standing tall she shifted to a fighting stance, hands lifted to guard her as her love had taught her, facing her shoulder to her opponent. Roaring with rage he came at her, swinging a punch at her head. Blocking with her arm, she slipped under his arm, using the training taught to her out of love and care for her protection. Shoving his arm to continue his momentum she threw her weight behind the punch that connected with his jaw. Her hand stung as she shifted a step or two away from him as he hit the ground. With a growl he shoved himself up and she went on the offense before he could guard himself, hitting with quick jabs punctuated with low words.
"I. am. enough. They love me. They will ALWAYS love me, and I WILL BE DAMNED IF I EVER LET YOU MAKE ME DOUBT THAT AGAIN" she screamed the last part, coming with a haymaker to his jaw.
He dropped again and she moved to strike him again, aiming a low kick at his ribs. Moving faster than she thought possible, he grabbed her leg, twisting to throw her to the ground. Stars sparkled across her vision again as she hit hard before rolling to her feet, her already bad knee aching. Before she could gain her ground he struck again, a fast blow to her lower ribs, making her gasp as she felt them crack. "You really think that? You know how hard he's falling, he's going to realize she's so much better than you and you'll lose EVERYTHING" he snarled, his voice rough and angry.
She staggered back, breathing shallowly from the pain and trying to not move her ribs more than necessary. Adrenaline flooded her system as the words tried to sink in, starting to grab hold before another low growl rumbled from her. The lightning flashed again, shining light off the band and stone on her left hand. More chilling than the growl a low laugh started to come from her as she stalked forward at him, her steps fluid as the adrenaline made her pain fade away.
"I am a goddamn Valkyrie. A shieldmaiden. I will protect them with everything I have and every time you hurt me, every time you make me doubt them, you hurt them. And that, I absolutely cannot abide. Try as you will, this ring is mine, my promise of eternity from him and apparently you need that imprinted on you to remind you of it too" she said, her voice eerily calm with a cold rage behind it.
Her steps graceful and steady she approached him, noting the sudden fear in his eyes as he faced the beast he had thought he'd beaten and broken. Steam rolled off her as the rain hit her, the fire inside her raging. A flinch of her shoulder drew his attention and had him blocking upward even as she shifted to lash her foot out to connect with the inside of his knee. A sickening crack later he started to buckle even as she lashed out again, her left fist connecting with his cheekbone as the ring shining on it tore the skin open to let dark blood drip down. He hit the ground hard, clutching his face and knee even as he looked at her in absolute rage.
She stood looking down at him impassively, her gaze cold. "They love me. All of me, with all my flaws, all my weaknesses and strengths. You will not disrespect them by saying they lie. Now just lie there and bleed because every time you try to come after me, this will happen again until you can't rise again." Her words were even, haughty almost with a warm tone of love behind them.
Turning from him she walked through the storm, ignoring the pains and the rain pounding at her as she made her way home.
